How to Vote

Requirements

To register to vote, you will need to show documents:

-1- US Citizenship
-2- Residence in Louisiana
-3- Age being older than 18 with a birth certificate.

There are four places to register in Lafayette Parish.

=1= Register in Person in Lafayette Parish

Thew office is located in downtown Lafayette next to the Parish Courthouse near Buchanan and Main Street.

The easiest way is to have one of these two cards:

-1- Louisiana driver’s license; or
-2- Louisiana Special ID card issued by the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles;

If you do have not Louisiana state ID, then you need to prove your name, residence, citizenship, and age.

Your name and residence can be proved with
-1- current utility bill,
-2- bank statement,
-3- government check,
-4- paycheck.

You may prove your age and citizenship with a birth certificate or other official document. If you do not have a birth certificate, then you can still register. But, the registrar of voters will do a computer check to verify your information. That will delay giving your voter registration card. It might take as long as two weeks for one to arrive at your address by US mail.

=2= Register at the Office of Motor Vehicles

Due to COVID restrictions, you will need to make an appointment online. You will need an email address and a phone number.

The office is near Carencro on Interstate 49 on the Gloria Switch Exit.

=3= Register Online with A Driver’s License

You can register online, but you need to use your Louisiana driver’s license or Louisiana special ID card. There is an audit code on the card that you must enter. The audit code is a four digit number labeled AUDIT on the front of the card.

=4= Register Online with Mail-in Application

You may complete the online form and print the form to paper.

You then have to submit the form by mail to the Registrar of Voters in the parish where you live. The address for Lafayette Parish is listed above.

To register with a mailing application, you must provide at least the last four digits of your social security number or full social security number.

If you have none of these forms of identification, then you need to a copy of one of ID’s:

1) a copy of a current and valid photo identification;
2) a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address.
